This is an album of instrumental guitar music. The tracks were written and recorded at home at various points during 2021, with some preliminary work done during 2020.

I've played in bands for a long time, always as a drummer and sometime vocalist. Around four years ago, I took up guitar and made a daily practice out of it. At some point, I started writing, and then later recording, original music. In February 2021, I contributed a track to my friend Brad Farberman's 'Stay in Shape' compilation ("magna eye," which also appears here), and from there, I decided to make an album. That is what you have here. Most of it is multi-tracked; some of it involves loops.

An obvious inspiration for the music, in form and sometimes in content, is Sonny Sharrock's 'Guitar,' one of my favorite albums ever. I would never compare my work to that of a master like Sonny; I just mean to say that I owe him, and specifically that record, a debt. Mood- and texture-wise, I also thought about things like Ween's 'Quebec,' Mick Barr's various Ocrilim recordings and, of course, John Fahey.

It was important to me to make the record entirely by myself, something I'd never done before. Playing in a band is my first and primary love, but there's something gratifying about being able to create and realize music in a self-contained way.

A lot of this has been about learning the guitar, and learning music. How chords work, how a melody fits over them, and that sort of thing. What you hear here is all pretty rudimentary, but the results speak to me. I don't really know how to classify the music other than to say that I think of these as songs. There are obvious moments of chaos and chance but mostly I mapped out where I was going. I like listening to these pieces and I hope you will too.
